Elementary Education Act abolished fees for primary schooling, death of Prince Albert Victor, second-in-line to the throne, Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes published, the last broad gauge train ran on the Great Western Railway main line out of London Paddington station with 177 route miles of its line then converted to standard gauge, the annual Budget established death, Michael Marks formed the partnership of Marks & Spencer with Thomas Spencer, and the first motor bus ran in London. In 1895 John Henry Knight built in Farnham the first purpose-built petrol driven vehicle to run on public roads.
